Healthy and Cheap Snacks That The Whole Family Will Love For Your Next Road Trip Or Vacation!

February 17, 20244 min read

Healthy and cheap snack options are just one of the ways that we live frugally. We also budget every single payday, and we make sure every dollar has a place.

I have three kids now and they all like different things! I’m sure I’m like anyone with kids; most kids want junk food. However; there are certainly some healthy and cheap snacks out there that they all enjoy. We make sure to keep these things stocked in the house and on hand when we take a trip.

As a family of 5, vacations are an every 2 or 3-year rotation, so most of the time we take road trips! When we do a road trip it’s usually within 2-3 hours of where we live. Any farther than that and we will most likely have to stay the night! Even if we do stay the night, I focus on bringing healthy and cheap snacks with us so my kids will not get hungry in the car.

Healthy snacks are a great way to curb appetite for kids and adults alike anyway! If we focus on healthy snacks most of the time, they usually keep you fuller longer and ultimately will satisfy your craving better than a Snickers bar would! Here are some of our go-to healthy and cheap snacks that I make ahead or just make sure are in our travel bag when it comes to being away from the house for long periods.

Healthy and Cheap Snacks List

  • Hard-boiled eggs

  • Carrot sticks with hummus

  • Celery sticks with peanut butter

  • Orange slices

  • Apple Slices

  • Meat and cheese (we can make roll-ups!)

  • Triscuits

  • Granola bars

  • Popcorn

Healthy Snack Choice #1

One of my go-to healthy snacks is hard-boiled eggs. These are so easy to make ahead of time and they are such a good source of protein as well! If we’re feeling like we might pull over to eat some lunch on the way to our destination, we can even cut them up and make egg-salad sandwiches, too!

Veggie sticks

My next go-to healthy snacks are celery sticks and/or carrot sticks! My household leans toward carrots and hummus rather than celery and peanut butter, but I will do both some times! I’ve made my own hummus in the past, but to be honest, most of the time I just buy some because it tastes just as good in my opinion, plus, it’s easier for this full-time working mama! And when you want to live a frugal lifestyle like we are, you don’t want to buy a bunch of random ingredients like tahini that you won’t use up before it goes bad!

Fruit is a must!

Fruit is always yummy! Granted fruit has more sugar, but it’s natural sugar so I don’t worry about that too much. Fresh fruit is a great option to take on road trips as well. You don’t even have to cut them up beforehand but my kids tend not to eat all of an apple or orange when it’s not cut up (I have no idea why, if anyone has ideas, please tell me! Other than kids are just kids haha) We also LOVE grapes and these are really easy to take with us so it’s a no-brainer!

More healthy and cheap options

My family and I also love meat and cheese of any sort! These are so easy to prep and not that expensive either. For sure way less expensive than eating out for every meal and snack! Sometimes we’ll combine it with Triscuits to make it even more delicious. Again, these are just easy to assemble and a great go-to for a protein option.

Other healthy snacks

Triscuits as I mentioned above are also a number one favorite in my household. Whether we pack them with meat and cheese or eat them plain, either way, all 5 of us love them. Granola bars are more the kids’ fave, not mine, but also a great option for road trips since they’re individually wrapped! The last thing on the list is popcorn, which I know is kind of hard to do when you’re on a road trip, but you can always buy some of the individual bags of white cheddar popcorn!

These are just some ways my family of 5 tries to live frugally. Healthy and cheap snacks go a long way in my household. Groceries are one of the biggest categories that people overspend on, so we are looking for cheaper and healthier options all the time. Saving money on our grocery bill is how we’ve gotten to the point where we are one month ahead on our mortgage, too!
